For My Man...

"To the world you may just be one person, but to one person you may be the world." - Brandi Snyder

Today is a very special day for Mr. X and I. Not only is it Mr. X's birthday, but it is also our one year anniversary of getting engaged!!  One year ago today, Mr. X made me, without a doubt, the happiest girl in the world by asking me to be his wife. From that day forward our lives were changed and we have been riding high ever since.  I cannot believe what this past year has brought and I am so excited for the years ahead with my new hubby.

Today is a reminder to make your wedding day about your man, just as much (well, almost) as it is about you.  Mr. X made one request leading up to our wedding day; he wanted to play hockey that morning. Hockey has been a big part of Mr. X's life ever since he could tie up his skates and since his initial idea was a Stanley Cup wedding cake, this seemed relatively reasonable.  He invited his family and friends to join him on the ice, in their favourite jersey, for an outdoor game of 'pickup' hockey and a few bevvies.  Danielle Da Silva was there to capture the moments hours before we tied the knot.

Highlights from Mr. X's morning:

Happy Birthday Mr. X! I love you more than a blogpost can sum up and look forward to many wonderful memories to come. Thank you for an incredible year.

Yours Truly,

A (or I guess, Mrs. X)

Pointe Shoes and Soccer Balls

"You don't take a photograph, you make it." -Ansel Adams

Engagement photos are an integral step during your wedding planning process and should certainly not be overlooked. They present you with the opportunity to get to know your wedding photographer, get more comfortable in front of the camera and see what works and what doesn't before the big day.  They also offer great memories and pictures of you and your fiance which can be used for thank you cards, guest books, customized favors, save the dates or just for yourselves.

Recently, I came across a friend's engagement pictures which caught my eye since they were fun, playful and simply made me smile. I always like when couples look like they're having fun and add a personal touch. Andrew of Union Eleven Photographers captured some great moments between Sarah and Matthew. Their bright colours and smiles are contagious.

Thank you Sarah for sharing your beautiful photos.  I look forward to seeing your wedding pictures in September. Congrats again to you and Matthew.

Yours Truly,

A

Weddiquette

"In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle; stand like a rock." - Thomas Jefferson

Alright, we’re not exactly the types to play by the rules. In fact, breaking them every now and again can be quite liberating (and you know it’s true). But when it comes to wedding etiquette, so much of it tends to fall into the grey zone. Never fear, A and S have no qualms in breaking it down for you and we’re certainly not shy about it. This is not only for the hosts, but for all you guests out there whose refrigerators are covered in invitations galore.

Guest List – It’s your day, so really you should invite whomever you’d like to share the wonderful occasion with. It’s important to remember that if your parents and parents-in-law are throwing the shindig for you (aka footing the bill), they WILL have some say about who’s included on the roster (rightfully so). Just keep in mind, you NEVER want someone to receive your invite in the mail and think to themselves, “Ugh, I don’t want to go ” or “why was I invited?”  If you think they might look at it like an obligation they wish they didn’t have, then they shouldn’t make the cut. It’s a wedding, not a sample sale.

Invitations – Send them out a minimum of two months prior to the big day (three months for out of town guests, especially the ones travelling across the country or overseas). Don’t send them out one month before the wedding, unless you’re attempting to shave your guest list and hoping people will have prior engagements already (if that’s the case, don’t invite them in the first place!)

RSVP’ing – As an invited guest to any sort of event, whether it be a shower, engagement party, rehearsal dinner or to bear witness to holy matrimony, as soon as you know if you’re able or unable to attend the function, send back your RSVP card. It takes very little effort to pop a postage paid card in the mailbox, but it makes a HUGE difference to the people planning the affair. The sooner the bride and groom have their guest list confirmed, the sooner they can advise all of their vendors and ensure a smooth planning process.

Plus Ones – Nowadays, it’s acceptable practice to invite single guests to attend solo, especially when you’re trying to keep the numbers (and costs) down. However, if someone is attached, meaning if they have a significant other (significant being the operative word), then you ought to invite them with their honey too.  Now, guests listen up – it is not necessary to find some random on match.com just so you don’t have to sit alone throughout the slow songs, especially if you’re going to a wedding where your friends will be there. Nevertheless, if you know in advance that you will not know anyone besides the happy couple, and you’ve been given the option, it doesn’t hurt to bring a date to keep you entertained.

Punctuality – It’s vital, for all parties involved. We are all about being fashionably late, but the only person who should be making an entrance at a wedding is the bride! If the event is called for a certain time, show up 10-15 minutes early to err on the side of caution. That allows time for any unexpected delays, like running into traffic, getting a speeding ticket or looking for parking, plus you’ll get a better view of the ceremony by snagging good seats. This rule goes for the bridesmaids and groomsmen as well; if the couple asks you to be somewhere at a specific time, it’s your solemn duty to abide.

Hope these tidbits are helpful! TGIF!

Until next time,

A & S

Sundae Funday

We can remember those hot, sunny days when the sound of a bell chiming its way down the street meant only one thing; the ice cream truck was here, and we needed a dollar or two, ASAP.

Summertime soirĂ©es are in full swing, and a refreshing sundae bar is the perfect detail for the season. A wonderful alternative to a sweet table or candy buffet, have your guests create their own sundaes from a crafty display of flavours and toppings galore.

It's Getting Hot in Here

"Summer heat, boy and girl meet, but uh-oh those summer nights"  Summer Nights, Grease

With the heat wave upon us, it is quite clear that summer is here! For all the brides that have spent the last year planning their big day, it is impossible to let a little humidity get in their way.  However, your guests might not agree.  Embracing an outdoor ceremony will be a little tough when your skirt is stuck to the backs of your legs and your hair has glued itself to your forehead.  Think of them sitting under the scorching sun and plan ahead for your outdoor nuptials and consider turning your wedding ceremony programs into fans! They are practical, charming and your guests will be thanking you in this hot and sticky weather.

Below are some "chilling" examples:
This stylish fan comes in an array of colors and can be found on Etsy
White and coral fans found at Martha Stewart Weddings - download template HERE and make them yourself!!
Chandelier Estate Opulence Fan Program by Citrine Designs
Bright yellow heart shaped fans - photos from Style Me Pretty

A basket of fans as guests enter your ceremony - Pinterest

We think these are FANtastic!

Mad Hatter's Tea Party

"Of all the silly nonsense, this is the stupidest tea party I've ever been to in all my life." Alice, Alice in Wonderland

Tea parties are popular afternoon bridal shower themes and we just adore any party involving vintage tea cups and bite size treats.  Consider making your next tea party an ode to Alice in Wonderland and let your whimsical creativity take control.  A Mad Hatter's theme can involve many fun and interesting twists to the standard tea party.  Try asking your guests to wear bright and playful hats, present the bride with her requested tea set as a gift, use playing cards as your table cards and labels, make the bride the 'Queen of Hearts' for the day and moreover let the topsy-turvy, zany ideas run wild.

Below are some stunning and inspirational 'Alice' themed ideas for your next event:

Keep On Truckin'

Let it be known that we are BIG fans of the late night wedding snack. We like a little salty along with our sweet, and you can count on party-goers appreciating a quick greasy fix post-dance floor. There are so many fabulously cute ideas for serving up delish mini eats at the stroke of midnight, but a relatively recent trend is the food truck phenomenon. Having one of those bad boys roll up will wow the guests while simultaneously satisfying their (most likely, drunken) cravings.

When it comes to Montreal, the talented foodies behind Grumman '78 deliver an array of tacos to die for, with vegetarian options like refried beans with Spanish pimento, pickled onions and julienne radish topped with feta, or the heartier braised beef burrito for meat lovers. End your evening with a fiesta!

In Ottawa, the renowned Relish the Flavour carts a slew of delectable delights, inspired by Canadian, Mexican and Asian flavours, such as the fried green tomato open faced sammy with basil mayo and home made potato chips, masa cakes with jerk chicken and mango salsa, and fresh mini doughnuts with strawberry sauce. Yes please!

Toronto hauls the likes of Gourmet Bitches, stacked with a seriously bitchin' menu. Besides the fact that we LOVE the name (obviously), this food truck totes something for everyone, with tamarind and kiwi beef sliders, dry rub chicken wings and Korean yam fries to name a few (there's even a kale and arugula salad with garlic chips for skinny bitches). Love it.

Gourmet grub like this will have your guests talking...with their mouths full.

Until next time,

A & S
