Please Return To....

"Ever since my twelfth (birthday), I've been looking forward to my sweet sixteen." - Samantha, Sixteen Candles

Although this is not a wedding related post, I thought I would share the cupcake toppers I recently made for my cousin's Sweet 16. In honor of her birthday, her family got her a pair of beautiful Tiffany & Co. earrings so her mom (my aunt) asked us to make cupcakes in Tiffany blue. My cousin, sister and I made it our mission to make the best cupcakes we knew how. Since none of us are experts with  fondant (although we tried), we opted for creative and cute cupcake toppers, paired with edible pearls and sparkles for a professional look. We also used Tiffany & Co. boxes to create our own cupcake stand. Check them out below.

As another surprise for Alyssa's 16th birthday, I made her a 'fake ID' and presented it to her at dinner. She successfully attained her G1 (driver's permit) that day so it was perfect.

Thanks for letting me be a part of your special celebration Shorty.  Love you!

A

Sundae Funday

We can remember those hot, sunny days when the sound of a bell chiming its way down the street meant only one thing; the ice cream truck was here, and we needed a dollar or two, ASAP.

Summertime soirĂ©es are in full swing, and a refreshing sundae bar is the perfect detail for the season. A wonderful alternative to a sweet table or candy buffet, have your guests create their own sundaes from a crafty display of flavours and toppings galore.

He Asked...

"I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." - Harry Burns, When Harry Met Sally (tribute to Nora Ephron)

There is nothing more beautiful (and exciting!!) then when two people find their perfect match and decide to spend their lives together.  Our friends, S and A (this could get confusing) jetsetted to Turkey for a fun-filled vacation and unannounced to S, A had a romantic proposal in mind.  On their second day in Istanbul he popped the question and the two have been living on a cloud ever since. With their friends anxious to see them (and the ring), we threw them an impromptu get together for all to celebrate.

Jenna Placey at The Investment Baker prepared the cupcakes for S and A. With creams, golds and whites as the colour palate and vanilla as the flavour of choice, she prepared beautiful and tasty treats. See the pictures below:

Congrats S and A!! Couldn't be happier for you two!

'Pop' Goes the Weasel

I live for sweet tables and find myself always looking for a newer and better idea to share and when this one 'popped' up, I was in love! If you or your groom are popcorn enthusiasts, why not wow your guests with a popcorn bar?  It is fun, playful, aesthetically pleasing and best of all, original! The other bonus about having popcorn served at your next event is it is easy for guests to enjoy while standing (there's nothing worse than trying to juggle your fork and wine glass).  Not to mention, the play on words you could use for 'popping' and 'pop' are endless. Fill your apothecary jars with different flavoured popcorn and add labels for a whimsical and memorable table.  And if popcorn is your thing, but you don't want to dedicate your whole sweet table to it, add labelled boxes filled with popcorn as a treat. Be creative with this idea and have fun!

After a recent trip to Chicago, I haven't been able to get the delicious Garrett's popcorn out of my head (or my teeth for that matter) and luckily it lead me to stumble upon these images:

We're total suckers for labeling, and fancy chalkboards alike, so when we discovered a wonderful little Etsy shop that married these two together, we were sold! The crafty creations brought to us by Bradens Grace feature a large variety of stands, tags, frames, wine charms and a bunch of other chalk friendly finds. The heart-shaped chalkboard labels are ideal for sticking on mason jars to create a shabby chic vibe for your candy bar.

Groomed to Perfection

"The most dangerous food is wedding cake." - American Proverb

Groom's cakes have become a very popular tradition for the wedding reception or rehearsal dinner.  It is a great opportunity to be creative and stray from your colors and theme of your wedding day.  Often showcased at the rehearsal dinner, the cakes also lend themselves  for the centerpiece of the evening. Who doesn't love an edible focal point?  This is a great opportunity to make a cake just for your man!  Sports, video games and electronics are popular themes and always entertain the crowd and your groom.

Jenna Placey from The Investment Baker (I love the name!) made a cake for Mr. X for our Out-of-Towner dinner the night before our wedding.  I kept it a surprise from Mr. X and he was genuinely thrilled when he saw the masterpiece Jenna created.  Our biggest ongoing rivalry is between our hockey teams and I knew this would be the perfect theme for our cake.  The base of the cake was a hockey rink with both of our teams' logos on center ice.  On the edge a bride and groom sat in their opposing jerseys and the cake read, "Two Teams, One Love".  Our guests loved the cake and the red velvet flavor was a hit that night and the next morning. Thanks again Jenna for all of your hard work and this amazing cake!!

If you are planning to have a groom's cake, here are some great ideas:

Spring Trend Alert

“A mask of gold hides all deformities.” – Thomas Dekker

After attending the wedding shows earlier this year and the endless hours I spend on wedding webistes, it seems obvious that there is a major trend in wedding cakes taking over and I personally adore it!  Metallic hues are making a huge mark on the baking world and it looks like gold and silver cakes are going to be the ‘it’ thing this spring. For all of those brides tying the knot in the upcoming months, these are definitely note worthy cakes.  There is something so regal about a gold leaf cake and it looks spectacular when paired with spring and summer hues.  Marie Antoinette inspired sweet tables are nothing short of fabulous and what better centrepiece than an all-gold cake! Or picture a dessert table with miniature silver cakes and a 3 tiered silver masterpiece for guests to enjoy and swoon over.  The idea of adding some glitz and glamour to your wedding cake is top notch and I look forward to seeing them this upcoming season.

Here are some jaw-dropping metallic cakes to hit the stands (cake stands, that is) recently;

Be Mine

"Oh, if it be to choose and call thee mine, love, thou art every day my Valentine!" - Thomas Hood

Today we celebrate love in a variety of ways; from romantic gestures to candlelit dinners for two, to cute little heart shaped notes in the schoolyard, Valentine's Day inspires all sorts of people (and of course the chocolate and greeting card companies too) to send a touch of sweetness to those nearest and dearest.

In honour of a holiday filled with flowers and candy (two of our favourite things), we couldn't resist sharing some lovely V-day themed creations.
