A Shoe In

Shoes are an investment (or at least that's what I tell Mr. Z when I come home toting yet another shoebox). Shoes always fit, and if proper care is taken, they can last for many years. Every girl who's collected her fair share of bridesmaid dresses, or has a summer calendar stacked with weddings galore, knows the importance of finding that one perfect pair to get you through the season.

Check out some fabulous footwear, all courtesy of Shopbop, to take you from the bridal shower to the dance floor.

We adore the trend of having photos of your shoes taken, after all, you usually can’t see them under the dress, and more often than not they deserve their own picture.  Today we are showcasing fun sayings, designs and crystals for the bottom of your shoes!  These are perfect to give any bride and groom as a shower gift and they also have shoe adornments for your bridal party. Whether your photographer is capturing an artsy snapshot of your feet, or catching a glimpse of your sole while sitting, or even up in the air mid-Hora, these accessories are sure to make an imprint in your wedding album for years to come.

Have a look at what we found at the wonderful Etsy shop, Your Happily Ever After, and start the new trend of not just fancy feet but glammed-up soles.

Something Blue

As I’m sure most of you know, there is a custom that states a bride is to carry or wear four objects to bring her luck on her wedding day – “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”. This dates back to an old English rhyme that actually ended with “a sixpence in your shoe”.

According to this tradition, each item is associated with a different representation – something old a symbol for continuity while something new offers optimism for the future; something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness, and last but not least, something blue stands for purity, love and fidelity. The sixpence in the shoe accounts for good fortune and prosperity, but nowadays this last part of the verse is widely forgotten (I can’t imagine that a coin inside a pair of Louboutin pumps would make them any more comfortable than they already are not).

I personally think it’s sweet to uphold this little ritual. On my wedding day, I used my grandmother’s Kiddush cup to drink kosher wine during the ceremony for my something old, while my dress acted as my something new. My mother’s wedding band was used in our ceremony, representing something borrowed, and finally, my wonderful friends bought me a Montreal Canadiens (Mr. Z’s favourite hockey team) garter, to wear as my something blue.

It’s really beautiful when these items are family heirlooms or have personal meaning attached to them, but it’s also a lot of fun to be innovative in your choices!

You’ve got the old and the new; ask a friend to borrow and then buy something blue! Here are some cute and creative ways to incorporate the colour into your day;

Fancy Footwork

Oh yes, I love to do shoes. I'm not a fetishist but I love to do shoes.” – Karl Lagerfeld

It would be an understatement to say that I love my shoe collection. I truly cherish it. Shoes (along with handbags) are the ultimate purchase because, if well taken care of, they can be treasured forever. Sure, trends come and go, but they almost always make a comeback (1970’s revival of the platform pump ringing any bells?).

When our mothers’ got married, they typically bought a pair of satin, white pumps, most likely at the boutique in which they got their gown. But these days we’re faced with a bevy of choices for our walk down the aisle.

Whether it’s a crystal clad statement shoe, a traditional ivory pump, or something practical that can be worn to any formal event thereafter, the options seem endless.

Shoes can change an entire look, or in Cinderella's case, an entire life :)
